Choose a litter box by fit and cleaning access before material. With either stainless steel or plastic, check usable space, entrance height and removable parts. A steel base still needs cleaning, and a “stainless steel” box may also contain plastic components.

Measure the fit first.

01 · Room inside
Check usable tray space, not just the outside dimensions. Your cat needs room to turn and dig without feeling squeezed.
02 · An easy entrance
Look at the actual step-over height. Older cats and cats with limited mobility may need a lower entrance.
03 · Space to clean
Allow room to lift the cover and remove the tray. Check that the parts fit your washing area before buying.
For size and access, Cats Protection recommends room to turn and lower sides for cats with mobility difficulties.
Steel or plastic? Inspect the whole box.

“Stainless steel litter box” may describe the base, not every component. Check the material of the tray, shell and accessories separately.
For a steel tray
Inspect the metal base, edges and joins. Check whether you can lift the tray, reach its corners and remove any plastic shell for separate cleaning.
For a plastic tray
Inspect the plastic surface for damage and worn areas. Check stability, access to corners and whether the manufacturer allows your usual cleaning products.
Neither label tells you whether the entrance suits your cat or the assembled box fits your home. A steel base still needs regular cleaning.
Introducing a different litter box
Keep a familiar option available while your cat explores the new one. Avoid changing the box, litter and location all at once; watch how your cat enters, turns and exits.

Cleaning and care
Follow the care instructions for each component. CDC distinguishes cleaning, which removes dirt and germs, from disinfecting, which uses chemicals to kill germs. Use compatible products and follow their labels before returning the tray to your cat.
