This August, Clear The Shelters runs across the United States for the twelfth year. Since 2015 it has helped more than 1.3 million animals find homes.
Nobody adopts because it is the convenient option. You take home the one who has been waiting the longest, or who is older than the kitten in the next cage, or who hid at the back when you walked past. You choose the animal over the easy thing.
That decision is the same one we try to make every time we design a product.
We build for the one who lives in it
A cat puts its face in the litter box several times a day. It breathes there, digs there, stands in it. So dust is the first thing we engineer down, not the last — our attapulgite litter tests to under 0.35%, with 98% ammonia removal and clumping that lifts clean in one scoop.
That first number exists for the cat. Nobody buys litter because of it. Which is exactly why we think it matters.
Nothing added that the animal didn't ask for
Our litter is natural mineral attapulgite from our own Australian source, worked with for three decades and dual-certified to ilac-MRA and CNAS. No added fragrance, no chemical deodorisers. Odour is handled by the mineral's structure, not covered over with perfume aimed at the human in the room.
What we sell shouldn't outlive the animal
A cat needs litter every month for fifteen years. That is a great deal of plastic, unless you plan for it. So our buckets come back to us — return five, get one free — and used litter is turned into fertiliser rather than going to landfill.
Care is mostly boring
It rarely looks like the photo on adoption day. It looks like a quiet corner for the litter box, away from the food. Like not switching their litter in week one, when everything else in their world has already changed. Like keeping the dust down in a small room with a nervous animal in it.
That part is ours to help with. The part that changes a life is yours.
Setting up for a new arrival
If someone is coming home this month, this is the short list:
- Natural mineral cat litter — enough to settle in on, and to transition gently from whatever the shelter was using.
- Litter boxes & gear — a wide entry and a splash guard, so a cat that has been living in a cage has somewhere it can turn around.
If you have been thinking about it
There is no better month. Adoption fees are reduced or waived at many participating shelters, and the animal you would be bringing home has already waited longer than it should have.
