To clean an indoor dog toilet with a grate and tray, remove waste, separate the parts, wash and rinse them as their care instructions allow, then dry and reassemble securely. Check beneath the grate as well as the surface your dog stands on.

Three places to check.

Top surface
Look for waste or residue on the grate and around its edges.
Tray and litter
Lift the grate safely to inspect underneath. A clean-looking top does not tell you the condition of the litter.
Around the toilet
Check the floor, supports and contact points for spills or trapped debris.
A cleaning routine to follow.
Prepare the area.
Keep your dog away while the toilet is apart. Set out a waste container and dedicated cleaning tools in a suitable washing area.
Remove waste and separate the parts.
Handle the grate and tray according to the product instructions. Dispose of used litter and waste under local rules; do not wash litter down the drain.
Clean, rinse and dry.

Where the component’s care instructions allow, wash with soap and water, scrub away residue, rinse and dry. If disinfecting is needed, clean first and follow the product label for contact time, rinsing and drying. Never mix cleaning products.
Refill and reassemble.
Use compatible litter as directed. Seat the grate securely and check stability before your dog returns. Clean the washing area and wash your hands.
This sequence follows CDC guidance on cleaning pet supplies; your product’s care instructions take priority.
Where should I wash the parts?
Use a dedicated wash tub where practical. If using a laundry sink or bathtub, remove personal items first, then clean and disinfect the washing area immediately afterwards. Keep the work away from food preparation and follow the CDC guidance linked above.
What should I check before buying?
Check whether the tray fits your washing space, whether you can lift its parts, and whether the toilet and litter are intended to work together.
This guide covers a grate-and-tray setup. Grass toilets and pads have different care requirements. For placement, read our indoor dog potty area guide.
Safety reference: CDC guidance on cleaning and disinfecting pet supplies. Always follow your toilet, litter and cleaning product instructions.
